The Marshall Plane Crash

      It was a tragic day for the people of Marshall University. On November 14, 1970 a plane heading for West Virginia crashed. The DC-9 plane carried 75 people that were connected to the Marshall University football team.  Among the dead were 37 players from the Marshall football team, along with five coaches, several boosters and fans of the football program. Earlier that day Marshall had lost a very close game to the East Carolina Pirates. The plane crashed into a small hill during a heavy rainstorm just about a mile west of the Tri-State Airport, exploding into flames and killing everyone aboard. This tragic event was the worst sports related tragedy in United States history.
