Tough Times

The unemployment rate rose through the roof in 1976. An estimated 25.9 million people were out of work and living in poverty. It was the largest number since 1970. The unemployment hit high all over the world. Many people made little money but still continued to spend. In Argentina, the unemployment rate reached 17.2 percent, in Britain and France’s unemployment rate was in the double digits, and it was about 15 percent in the US. The prices of oil and gas made this situation even worse. For many Americans, the seventies ended with a nervous eye towards the economy.
