Alaskan Black Gold

After three long years of building, the pipeline was finally finished. In June, oil began flowing through the Alaskan pipeline to the rest of the country. The lines ran from Prudhoe Bay’s North Slope oil fields to refineries in Valdez. This oil holding spot was one of North Americans richest. Just setting up alone and the cost of the pipelines was about nine million dollars. The pipes were built to pump two million barrels of petroleum out of the oil field each day. There was more than eight hundred miles of pipe that crossed 800 rivers. These refineries reduced imports from the Middle East and other rich oil regions by fifteen percent.
