Apollo 13

Apollo 13 was the third Apollo mission set to land on the moon. However in the middle of the mission an oxygen tank blew up which caused serious damage, and it forced Apollo 13 to cancel there landing on the moon. Apollo 13 was commanded by James A. Lovell, with John L. Swigert as the pilot, and Fred W. Haise as the other pilot. The mission launched on April 11, 1970. Two days later, a fault in the electrical system of one of the Service Module’s oxygen tanks produced an overpressure rupture, which caused a loss of electrical power and failure of both oxygen tanks. The crew shut down the Command Module and used the Lunar Module as a "lifeboat" during the return trip to earth. After living with limited power, loss of cabin heat, and shortage of water, the crew returned safely back to earth on April 17. This mission drew millions of Americans to their TV’s to see if the astronauts would make it home. Many people said this mission was a “successful failure”.
