Project Independence

Project Independence was a project announced by Richard Nixon. Most of Project Independence was lowering highway speeds to 55mph, converting oil power plants to coal, and completing the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System.   He announced this on November 7, 1973, because of the OPEC oil embargo. The OPEC is made up of 12 countries, Algeria, Angola, Ecuador, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela. It determined production and prices for oil, and kept prices the same for international oil markets. It also got rid of dramatic changes in price. Nixon wanted to eliminate American dependence on foreign oil, and find new oil reserves in the United States. Many protested against finding new sources of energy.  Many people thought, “That instead of finding new sources of energy, America should be addressing the overuse and waste of energy at the industrial level.” Sierra club official once said, “He is really calling for massive strip-mining for coal, and massive destruction of the land and pollution of the land and water.”
