Watergate Scandal

Picture
1968: Richard M. Nixon was elected president in one of the closest elections in history. When Nixon was elected, 300 American soldiers were dying in Vietnam every week. He implanted the Nixon Doctrine which was basically replacing American troops with capitalist Vietnamese troops. He was liked by America for some time until 1970. 1970 was the year four Vietnam War protesters were shot down by the Ohio National guard. The event shook America; people believe this was the start of the destruction of the Nixon Administration. In 1972 five people were arrested for breaking in to the offices of the Democratic National Committee. The head of the Nixon Administration denied this event had any link to the president. People of America start to get suspicious though after a couple events. First the Vice President Spiro Agnew resigns. He is then followed by two of Nixon’s top White House staff. Then one of the White House staff is fired. Soon Alexander Butterfield reveals that since 1971 Nixon recorded all the conversations and telephone calls in his offices. Nixon then refuses to turn over the recordings to the Senate Watergate Hearing. In 1973 Nixon declares “I’m not a crook” to a shocked nation. The Supreme Court ordered to hand over the recordings. In 1974 the House Judiciary Committee passes the first of three articles of impeachment. In less than two weeks, Nixon resigns being the first president to do so.
